The Brand New Baby Name Tag

We don't YouTube in the traditional way, yet couldn't pass up the chance to share our thoughts on the NEW 2019 BABY NAME TAG!  We decided to share our thoughts here. As you may know, we are a mother-daughter duo, who fell in love with naming in 2018. The videos on our youtube channel are just names, not opinions~ we don't discuss names there. We just love to produce name art @momandthepie on instagram, tweet interesting name musings and collect the best of name images on our Pinterest boards.  We've found a shared hobby and have had a fabulous time learning everything we can about names, finding others in the naming community and growing some of our techie skills. We are no experts! Just NAMERS.  Only on our blog will you find some of our opinions, our thoughts on naming trends and our favorites. Here are both MOM and THE PIE'S responses to the Brand New Name Tag~  Names I Love: 1. If you had a baby tomorrow, what would you call them? Boy & Girl?

Choosing a Truly Unique Baby Name

One morning after just tuning in to the Today show we heard that the next segment was going to be "Up and Coming Baby Names of the Year." Having recently named The Pie, I was interested. I'd only heard Isla on the sweet actress Isla Fisher and was sure that we'd nailed it. Something delicate, unique enough, and at that time we weren't hearing it around at all.  Looking into it now, the name Isla was not even in the Top 1000 names until 2008 and sure enough, as the morning show segment informed us, it rose rapidly in popularity jumping from 623 to 345 in just a year. To our delight, Isla has yet to crack the top 100 in the U.S. but we are seeing and hearing it more often.  As self-declared "namers" we've scrolled the endless lists, organized names into categories, and revel in the noticing of a name never heard before . Here are our top tips for choosing a truly unique baby name. Don't pick a name for your little girl that ends in "a

Names of Incredible Women

Incredible women in U.S. history are the inspiration for this collection of names for girls. A tribute to strong women, here are some of the beautiful names we found when exploring the lives of female American heroes. Maya Marguerite Annie Angelou known as Maya was a famous poet, writer and civil rights activist. Josephine Freda Josephine McDonald, known as Josephine Baker was an American-born French singer, dancer and the first black woman to appear in a major motion picture. Gloria  Gloria Marie Steinem is a political and social activist, distinguished authors and leader of the feminist movement in the late 1960's. Rosa Rosa Louise McCauley Parks is perhaps best known for her involvement in the Montgomery Bus Boycott and was an inspiring civil rights activist. Cora Cora Mae Brown worked for and supported her community through the Great Depression in Detroit, going on to serve as the first female African-American in the state senate of Michigan. Hattie Ha

BEST OF "Baby Names I Love But...."

The tag "Baby Names I Love But...." has YouTubers sharing lists of baby names they won't use, might use, will use and even describing how they chose the names they did use.  As we've mentioned, the discovery of a name we've never heard is one of the best things about joining the naming community. As we enjoyed watching these baby name videos, we collected the BEST OF "Baby Names I Love But...." September and Tuesday Hannah Carter  shared these gems. Both "time" inspired, and certainly unique. We see August all the time, sitting in the Top 200 for boys. Why not September? Both of these brilliant picks currently sit outside the Top 1000. Charley, Evan and Billie These gender neutral names come from  Brye Ashley , who admits loving "little boy" names for little girls. Very on trend, as we know there are more girls being named versions of  'Charlie' these days than boys. Suede, Lynwood and McConaughey Isabella Sainz

Now Trending in Baby Names

As self-proclaimed "namers" we find so much joy in the discovery of a name that is new to us. Lately we've been noticing that there are definite trends in naming right now. Here are a few of our observations. Vintage  We see the vintage trend in more than just naming. The Old Fashioned cocktail has made as big of a comeback as Jack and Henry. Both names, dipping out of the Top 100 for much of the 70's, 80's and 90's are back. Vintage apparel is all the rage, from denim styles to wedding dresses and "retro" swimsuits. Bringing it back from the past it on point. Here are a couple of vintage names we adore: Genevieve Spending time in the Top 100 in the early 1900's this lovely name for a gal is one of our favorites. Dipping as low as 691 in the late 60's, we think that this name is on the rise. With possible nicknames of Genna , Vivie , we find it so sweet. Helen This beauty is not coming back too fast. We think it will take bigger le

NewTubers

Are we still YouTubers if we don't appear in our videos? This was just one of the thoughts that crossed my mind as we figured out how to set up our youtube channel.  We are total youtube rookies. Things we googled: "Is iMovie good enough for YouYube?" and "What is an SEO?" Yes. it's true. We had no idea what SEO stood for. We had A LOT to learn. At one point The Pie made a really good point, being an avid YouTube watcher herself, she said, "videos don't get found, they get lost." Encouraging, right? Did you know that 300 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube every minute? No biggie. But we were just so excited to be creating! We were bursting with ideas and just wanted to get it all out there. We had lists upon lists. Lists of names, lists of video ideas, a giant to-do list and a list of a million questions. Here are a few of the questions we tried to figure out the answer to, and some of what we found helpful. How do you design ch

Popular ~ Unique ~ Daring

Alternatives to the top baby names are all the rage. Coming up with unique twists to the traditional favorites has namers swooning over new possibilities. Inspired by this YouTube video from the lovely SJ Strum , who does a baby name video every Monday, we take a look at some baby name alts. SJ took popular baby names and gave some unique and daring alternatives: The idea inspired many in the naming community and soon we were seeing it all over instagram done by popular namers like @monikermaven , who posted this in early May: The  Top Baby Names of 2017  was followed by countless articles, tweets and YouTube videos breaking down the data. Liam ousted Noah for the top spot on the boy's list while Emma held on to number one on the girly side. New to the naming community, we were simply excited to explore the SSA database and search tools. We didn't even know this website existed during the first few months of our naming adventure! Now we share our ideas for a Popula

Our Inspiration

We are obsessed. We've spent every free minute of the last four months on Mom and the Pie. We learned how to set up a youtube channel because Sunny Lenarduzzi is the best! We discovered tools for creation like Canva (amazing) and when we felt like we had NO IDEA what we were doing, we'd get a lovely reply to our comment from a fabulous namer like SJ Strum . We are finding inspiration in so many places. #Babynames on Pinterest? Don't even get us started! We created 30 Unique Names for Girls by collecting names that were new to us. There are at least 20 namers on instagram, including namespottings , who frequently has us laughing out loud. Did you know Baby Name Monday was a thing? You’re welcome. You don't have to be expecting to enjoy a weekly themed video such as Earthy Baby Names, Unisex Baby Names or Baby Names Inspired by Color every Monday from a variety of enjoyable youtubers. In the time since we started Mom and the Pie the SSA released their Top Baby

#Namingbaby

Mom was relaxing on the couch one night and the Pie was watching youtube videos. She came across "Baby Names I Love But..." and we laughed hysterically as a sweet gal shared her list of baby names she would not be giving her little one. The next video, suggested of course, featured another youtuber sharing her top ten baby names. She went on about imagining a little so and so... and "couldn't you just see a blah blah coming up the stairs?" We were hooked. Mom thought..... why would anyone want to watch these? Then proceeded to view at least eight more. One that really held our attention was a young woman who started her video with, "I'm just going to say names. See how they make you feel." This one stuck. We don't study the history of names. We don't research the meaning of names. We simply enjoy the way a name makes us feel. We are learning how to be techie! (it can make your head spin) We've started a youtube channel , an inst
